I understand the reservations with another intervention, but what’s going on in Syria right now is absolutely sickening. Lots of non-interventionists claim that UN actions in Libya established costly and irreversible precedent and that the real reason why western leaders were so gung ho about Libya had to do more with the ‘responsibility to protect’ oil reserves than it did human lives.
If you’re going to intervene, do it for the right reasons and be consistent. But who am I kidding; we’ll never get that right. In the meantime, the Assad regime continues to kill civilians, many of them children.
i just want to shove this in professor thompson’s face. non-violent resistance, my ass.
Yeah, I know. I’m trying not to get too terribly attached to the images (as important as I think they are to see) since a similar thing happened in ‘92 after H. W. Bush saw all sorts of truly horrific images of starving children in Somalia and intervened (not too much national interest there)…and then we got our asses handed to us. Clinton got the fall for it, so he avoided Rwanda in 94, and then he got shit for that, too…but then he went into Eastern Europe and was successful in toppling Milosovic. So I don’t know, humanitarian intervention is such a morass…I don’t think you can truly be for it or against it since it’s so situational. I just hate to see shit like this.
